Every Rabbit Is As Cute As A Button But They Are Just #NotJustForEaster

notjustforeaster

Easter is just around the corner and with it comes attention to the animal associated most with the holiday: rabbits. Alycia Corpiel, from Space Coast Animal Rights Group, recently placed an order of buttons from us to hand out at their events to raise awareness that bunnies are a loving but serious commitment. We talk with Alycia a little bit about her cause.

Kick Bright: Rabbits are cute. It seems like they would make a great pet. What should someone know going into adding a rabbit to their household?

Alycia Corpiel: Rabbits are super cute and are amazing pets! However, they take a lot more work than most people think. For one, they are 10+ year commitment and need to be spayed/neutered. They are very active, social animals, so they need a lot of attention and do not do well in a cage. Also, rabbits are so fragile. They are prone to heart attacks and can easily die by just eating the wrong thing. Unlike a cat or dog, rabbits are prey animals and startle easy, especially around situations of uncertainty, like with young children. And if those points aren’t enough for you, rabbits will chew on everything so you definitely need to bunny proof your home.

What kinds of things happen to rabbits when owners get tired of having them?

Well, if they are lucky, they make it to loving rescue groups. However, most of these rabbits don’t get this chance. A lot of bunnies are released to the wild, where they have no chance of survival, but mostly, these people will hold onto the rabbit and neglect it until it dies. It’s crazy because so many people are so unaware of the care these animals take that they honestly think they are doing it the right way, when really they are neglecting the rabbit and putting it at risk of illness or death. Through rabbit rescue, I have seen so many rabbits abandoned that are so filthy or so sick. Despite the thousands put into vet care, many of these animals will die quickly after arriving to the rescue. For example, Gainesville Rabbit Rescue caught a rabbit that was loose last year and she was so sick and covered in mites, to where they were living in her ears, anus, etc, that she died very quickly, despite the immediate vet care she received. It’s just so heartbreaking.

#NotJustForEaster billboard spotted in Central Florida.

Tell me a little about your involvement with the #notjustforeaster campaign. What is your involvement with the Space Coast Animal Rights Group?

I founded Space Coast Animal Rights toward the end of 2014, shortly after moving back to my hometown, Melbourne, FL. I had been vegan and an activist for several years at this point and I was so shocked by how little was being done locally to defend animals. There was a lot being done as far as rescue, but not so much along the lines of defending animals outside of dogs or cats or widely encouraging people to adopt, rather than shop. So, I started SCAR and it just grew and grew.

As for #NotJust4Easter, prior to starting SCAR, I volunteered with Gainesville Rabbit Rescue at their Orlando Chapter for several years. I saw so many abandoned rabbits come in after Easter so I knew I wanted to really focus on this in the Spring with SCAR. Originally, it was just going to be a social media campaign and I would do a couple of protests locally, but when we were awarded a grant from Lush Cosmetics in December, it blew up into a nationwide campaign, with activists planning #NotJust4Easter events all around the country. The response has been so amazing. It really gives me hope.

Alycia with her husband Matt and bunnies Skye and Scotch.

Do you have any rabbits for pets? How many? Tell me something about them.

Yes, I have two rescue rabbits. Scotch is a male American breed who was adopted from Gainesville Rabbit Rescue and is seven years old. He’s so adorable and very curious, always inspecting every inch of the house. He’s very reserved and doesn’t like to be touched very often but he will happily let you sit next to him and compliment him in soft tones. Lol. Skye is totally opposite of Scotch. She is four years old and a mini rex breed, adopted from Treasure Coast Humane Society. Honestly, I don’t believe she’s an actual rabbit.. She’s more like a bossy lap dog. She’s definitely a diva bunny and demands things to be her way but she’s also super loving and will lick your face for hours if you let her.

The Hex Tremors Make An Order

thehextremors

The Hex Tremors recently re-ordered some 1.5″ buttons from us. They are a rip-roarin’ southern garage rock band from Portland, Oregon. The band is led by Scott Long who started the band quite some time ago when he lived in Orlando, Florida where they were known for being very loud and very awesome. Scott resurrected his band last year with new members and are currently playing shows in the NW region.

You can find The Hex Tremors on Facebook and listen to their music on Reverbnation.

I added two bonus buttons to their order that I hand colored (seen above) before pressing. You will have to go to a show to get these special “chase” buttons. We thank Scott from ordering from us again!

Kindercore Vinyl to Open New Vinyl Record Pressing Plant

kindercorevinyl

Kindercore Records will be opening a new vinyl record pressing plant in Athens, Georgia this year under the name Kindercore Vinyl, maybe even early as June or July. The long running indie label, now manufacturers, purchased three brand new Viryl Technologies presses that are at the cutting edge of record technology. They will be able to press up to 2000-3000 albums a day with a goal of incorporating renewable resources into what has been a strict petroleum based industry.

Read more about what Kindercore is doing with an interview in Flagpole Magazine.

We were happy to make buttons for them. You will soon be able to get them from their online store. They already have shirts, patches and a million other cool things.

The Most Expensive T-shirt I Ever Bought
By Jeffrey Howard

This is the story about the most expensive vintage shirt I have ever purchased.

It’s opening day for baseball season for the Oakland A’s today as I write this. This year is a little more special as the Oakland A’s are renaming their baseball field in honor of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, my favorite baseball player.

Rickey Henderson was a professional baseball player from 1982 through 2003 and is considered the greatest baserunner and leadoff hitter. He owns several all-time MLB records including most career stolen bases, most runs and most leadoff home runs among others. His first record, set in 1982, was for stealing 130 bases, the most in a single season.

525a9356745c7_36200nThe reason he is even my favorite baseball player has nothing to do with any of his accomplishments. It has to do with I thought he had a really cool picture on a baseball card. In the third grade my teacher would get magazines like Dynamite and Bananas. I loved reading them. In one issue there was an uncut sheet of 1982 Topps that kids were supposed to cut out and collect. I had no interest in baseball but sure did cutting and collecting. I cut out the cards with third grade shake hands. There were probably nine cards in total I took home. I had no idea who any of these players were but this Rickey Henderson person just looked plain cool. Because of that he was then my favorite player.

It wasn’t until 7th grade until I actually had an interest in following baseball. It was easy to get into since I had a favorite player. By then Rickey was playing for the Yankees. I got to see him play in person during spring training against the Minnesota Twins when they trained in Orlando, Florida. I even saw him steal a base in person. It was the coolest!

In the 1990s I did own a Rickey Henderson t-shirt I bought at the mall. It was a neat but maybe a little terrible 90’s design. It went missing. I would check Ebay from time to time and it would never show up because I wanted to get one again, if possible. I did see it once as a tank top but passed.

About four years ago I came across a listing on Ebay of a Rickey Henderson shirt I had never seen before. It was a white and green ringer that had Rickey in a running position and it said “Rickey Henderson Steals A Record” dated 1982. How awesome was it to find such a shirt just about his first stolen base record? Was this something that actually existed? In all my years of collecting of Rickey items I never came across even a picture of this. Pretty unbelievable. Side fact: the same season he also set the all-time record for times being caught stealing.

I was watching some YouTube footage of Rickey, most likely filmed in the 1983 baseball season, and saw someone wearing this exact shirt. I could not believe it! If you watch the below video you can see a fan in the stands around the 0:50 mark.

The seller said it had never been worn or anything. When I received it I just could not believe how pristine the shirt was. It was even a perfect fit! It would now be my favorite forever shirt. I can say that about much of my clothes but really – this was the best one.

I am a little afraid to wear it often but I shouldn’t be. But it’s a special day for Rickey so I will wear it. I also have to mark my calendar for July 15th, it will be the first official Rickey Henderson Day. Neat.

Oh, I paid $50 plus shipping making it the most expensive shirt I paid for. Worth it!
